Construction Frames

...... The construction wood series began as a study of shape and rhythm, culminating with the current series which incorporates both the painted surface with the three-dimensional relief. The work is a response to a popular craft tradition from my native country of Colombia. “Balcones” are stylistic folk wall hangings representing colonial architectural details, sculpted in relief from wood or clay and then painted. This contemporary version deconstructs the architectural symbol and reinterprets it through the juxtaposition of layered wood elements. The painting becomes the focal point and establishes a symbiotic relationship with the construction. Representational figures are framed by the symbolic window or passageway, while abstract works are mirrored and enhanced by the asymmetrically balanced geometric or undulating shapes. Discarded wood scraps have been used as the primary medium for each work, serving a functional material role as well as providing significant environmental, social, and creational commentaries.
