......A glyph refers to a character or symbol, often representing a word, sound, or idea. Unlike our modern-day alphabet, many of these historical pictographic symbols possessed an emotive power beyond the actual text, representing a culture's otherwise incommunicable spiritual experiences. Our Western understanding of language is exclusively thought-based, our alphabet primarily relegated to the word itself. The aesthetic and emotive aspects of the glyph's communicative power have been lost in our language and culture. The exposure to precolombian symbols has shaped my perceptions about how the visual image can speak both symbolically and nonverbally. These symbols are the personal, contemporary reflection of my quest to reclaim the internal, emotive voice which becomes voided and lost in the sea of fonts and typefaces as we seek to say something of value in our modern culture.
